Trumpet
What is a Trumpet?
The trumpet is the musical instrument with the highest register in the brass family that uses a cupped mouthpiece shaped in a way that allows the player’s lips to vibrate to generate the instrument’s sound. Trumpets are among the oldest musical instruments, dating back to at least 1500 BC. They are constructed of brass tubing bent twice into an oblong shape with three valves, each valve increases the length of the tubing when engaged, thereby lowering the pitch.
There are several types of trumpets though the most common is the transposing instrument pitched in Bb. The trumpet is the most popular brass instrument used in a wide range of musical styles including ska, ska punk, classical, jazz, rock, blues, pop, rap, cuban music, mariachi and funk. In jazz the trumpet was one of the first notable melody and solo instruments. Several notable jazz pioneers on the trumpet were Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong and Maynard Ferguson.
